Spirited Women – All women’s Adventure Race: Late November 2021 e-news

View web version | Unsubscribe

Hi Spirited Women,

What a year it has been. Bring on 2022 and a new way of living we say!! We are so pumped about our two events in 2022 and hope you are all as excited as we are. As you know, preparation is the key to success, so we trust you are all getting out on your bikes and into the outdoors in preparation for next year’s events. To help keep you motivated through the holiday period and Xmas festivities we’ve got lots of information packed into this newsletter for all your preparation needs. Check out the below articles for more information!

As for COVID and our event, this is what we know as of today.

  • It is likely that we will be mandated to check vaccine passports for all participants and spectators. We are working on a system so you can upload your passports on to your EventPlus profile and our registration platform prior to the event so everything is as seamless as possible on the day. We will also have systems in place around and at the event to check all spectators and others at the event.
  • We are hopeful that if you are not vaccinated you will still be able to participate with a recent (i.e., within 72hrs) negative test result. This is TBC.
  • We are also hopeful that the entire country will be in either orange or green so we can run the event. If one part of the country is in red and that part of the country holds a large number of our staff or participants, we will be forced to postpone the event to a date in Spring 2022.

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. At this stage we are still not 100 percent sure what the landscape will look like in 2022.  We are watching closely and adapting to suit, with the intent to take it right to the wire to deliver our events. We plan to make our last assessment of the situation three weeks out from our events and update you all with our final plan of attack at that time. As I am sure you all understand the landscape changes daily and until we have experienced the new traffic light system and seen it in action it is very difficult to predict what it will mean for our events. We are working closely with the Ministry of Health and local Councils to ensure the best outcomes for all our participants, but as of today we still do not have clear answers for you.

OH MY! OH MY! CENTRAL HAWKES BAY, WHAT A TREAT!

Our Central Hawkes Bay course will blow your mind, it has a little bit of everything from stunning vistas, rolling farmland, to areas of native bush. We couldn’t ask for a more beautiful canvas. SOMETHING TO CHEER US UP FROM GOODBYE PRODUCTS

Becky from Goodbye products loves our event so much she has signed up to participate this year. Here is where she is at with her training right now.

“I’m not where I thought I would be with my training. Are you? Lockdown, a house move and a mountain of uncertainty have put a wringer into my training rhythm. I was in far better shape in June than I am now. One thing though, I feel my biking is helping me with handling uncertainty.  There’s nothing else to think of when you are riding, but riding. So, I’m picking up the pieces and starting again.  Sometimes it’s like that.

To cheer you on, we’ve got our brand-new personalised tins so that you can take our certified natural SPF 50 sunscreen wherever you go. Order through our website for free personalisation. It’s got your name on it!

“Wishing you great hours outdoors, from Becky and the team at Goodbye”

TEAM ZEENYA WANTS TO BRIGHTEN UP YOUR SUMMER!
How’s everyone hanging in there? Team Zeenya wants to acknowledge the tough times many people have been going through this year. Also, if you are in Auckland and looking for some kayaking tips, get in touch with Auckland Sea Kayaks who are running kayaking sessions for Spirited Women. The aim of these sessions is to give you a good foundation in the knowledge and skills essential for safe and enjoyable paddling.

During the lesson you will learn about: kayak equipment, kayak design and what to wear, as well as how to manoeuvre your kayak (forward, reverse, sideways, turning and steering) support strokes and how to recover from a capsize.

The session is 2 hours long and will involve paddling approx. 3.5 km.

WORDS OF WISDOM FROM TEAM THE SISTERS’ WINES

Setting Boundaries – The Art of Saying ‘Thank You, but NO! Are other ‘obligations’ getting in the way of your training? Learn how to say, ‘thank you, but no!’ and give yourself more personal time.

Many of us consider ourselves to be ‘time poor’, rushing from one thing to the next to fulfil all our obligations, multi-tasking all the way through to lights out at bedtime. We sometimes struggle to have time for ourselves to do the things we want to do, whether that is simply revelling in doing nothing at all, catching up for a glass of wine with our girlfriends – or anything that connects us with our sense of self, and refills our tank.

Click here to read the full article – you’ll thank them for it!

SPOT PRIZE MADNESS!

Camelbak , Ground Effect, Shredder Racks, BikeCraft NZ, Zeenya Clothing, Viking Kayaks, Kai Carrier, Further Faster, RAB, Patchell’s, GoodBye Products, NUUN, Salming NZ, NZ Adventure Retreats, Auckland Sea Kayaks.

We are super stoked to welcome Fix & Fogg to our Spirited Women family for our 2022 events. Each team will receive 4 jars of Fix & Fogg nut butter in their competitor gift boxes. How incredible is that! The flavours will include a mix of Super Crunchy, Smooth, Everything Butter and Granola Butter.

Roman and Andrea started Fix & Fogg in 2013 when they decided to leave the corporate life behind to create something meaningful, sustainable and delicious.
From humble beginnings selling jars at New Zealand farmers’ markets, Fix & Fogg has grown to become New Zealand’s most awarded nut butter company and the first New Zealand owned B-Corp certified food manufacturer.

Fix & Fogg’s award-winning butters are so popular because people can taste the difference in a product that’s made by humans who care about quality. It’s good for you, good for the community, and good for the planet. So grab your spoon and get ready to butter up.

Check out the Fix & Fogg website and Instagram page to keep up with all things nut butter!

FINISHLINE FEELS FROM ZEFFER!

We are stoked to announce that from 2022 we will be offering either a Zeffer Cider, Seltzer or 0%*Crisp Apple Cider as teams cross the finish line in both Central Hawke’s Bay and Wanaka.

In addition to their spectacular Cider and Seltzer drinks, Zeffer has crafted a very special cider that’s a New Zealand first: their new 0%* Crisp Apple Cider is the first 0% alcohol cider in New Zealand, and it’s made by the first cidery in New Zealand to achieve Zero Carbon certification (that’s Zeffer!). The 0%* Crisp Apple Cider is crafted from local Hawke’s Bay apples and fermented before the alcohol is carefully removed using highly advanced spinning cone technology. This process removes the alcohol while having minimal impact on the flavour. This refreshingly off-dry cider is lightly sparkling and full of flavour with a delicate sweetness. It’s also vegan, gluten-free and has only 39 calories per can.

Zeffer is so excited to be back as sponsors of the @spiritedwomensadventurerace again this year, and to celebrate, they have one team entry (any course) to give away for the seventh edition of the North Island Spirited Women — All Women’s Adventure Race, which will take place right in their own backyard in Hawke’s Bay from Friday 25th – Sunday 27th February 2022. Think how good a Zeffer Cider or Seltzer will taste after an epic adventure with your favourite people! The team at Zeffer can’t wait to welcome you at the finish line :

The team entry prize is valued at up to $1860, so if you know someone wanting to do this event, all they have to do is tag in three spirited women on the Zeffer Facebook post offering this prize to be in to win. This giveaway closes on Tuesday 26 October. This giveaway is not affiliated with nor endorsed by Facebook. There is one prize available. One winner will be drawn on 27 October and will be notified via Facebook. Prize is open to residents of New Zealand age 18+.

HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR GEAR FOR ADVENTURE RACING?

A favourite saying of mine is “there is no such thing as bad weather just bad clothing choices”. My advice is to buy good quality lightweight gear that will last longer, be lighter, and keep you safer when the weather turns on you. Check out our compulsory gear list and make sure you have it sorted prior to the event.

We have teamed up with Ground Effect ClothingFurther FasterZeenya ClothingSalming shoesCamelbak packs because we rate their products and believe that these brands fit with the Spirited Women ethos and will keep you safe whilst training and participating in our event. Get behind our event clothing, footwear and gear partners and support their brands.

BIKE CRAFT SKILLS CLINICS UPDATE

The mountain bike sections can be fun! Join a Bike Craft Clinic tailormade for this event and learn the skills you need to ride safely and with confidence on gravel roads, 4WD tracks, farm tracks and Grade 2/3 trail.  In addition, we show you how to make quick bike repairs and give you tips to support team-mates that may be struggling on the bike sections.  Our Clinics are followed-up with a Zoom session to answer any burning questions.

Having trouble kick-starting your training – let me help you get bike fit? Basic Plans are just $10 per week (inclusive of weekly email feedback to Paula so she can adjust plans each week for your personal circumstances).  A 12-week plan will make a significant improvement to your riding and fitness level; 8 weeks will get you well on your way to smiling around the course and 6 weeks will get you more confident and comfortable on your bike.  Plans can be more personalised and advanced if you wish.  Email: paula@bikecraft.co.nz to take up this opportunity.

Changes to South Island Clinic dates due to increasing uncertainty around COVID levels: We have had to make the difficult decision to defer our South Island Clinics due to start next week to January and February 2022. If you have already registered, you will have received an email notifying you of the changes.

SOME TOP TIPS FROM TEAM PATCHELL!

With a depth of practical experience, excellence in production engineering, and commitment to “right-first-time” design. Patchell Group is one of our highly generous sponsors who help transport our 40ft containers (loaded with kayaks, paddles, and PDFs) to each destination with care and ease! BIG thanks to the women who contribute significantly to their talented team!

What advice would you give first-timers?

Start training as soon as possible, do not wait for the beginning of a new week, for summer to arrive or until after Christmas. It’s going to be hard now and it’s going to be hard then, but the sooner you start the easier and less stressful it will be at the end.

HYDRATE WITH NUUN!

With summer around the corner, hydration is key.

We are beyond excited to have Nuun back on board for another year!  Nuun is an effervescent electrolyte tab packed with all the essential electrolytes needed to keep you hydrated. With less than 1 gram of sugar in each serving, Nuun is made with all you need to stay hydrated and nothing you don’t. Available at all leading sporting retailers nationwide.

YOU + FRIENDS + COLOUR = HAPPINESS!

Here at Zeenya clothing, we’ve always been about sharing the colour journey with those around us. So why not share the love with you, future Spirited Woman? As part of our prize packs, we’re proudly giving away vouchers to all members of the winning teams in distance and age group. But even if you don’t make the top spot on the podium, we’ve got some epic voucher spot prizes to giveaway at each of the events.

Got some training gear already? Make sure you tag us on your colourful adventures – we LOVE seeing what you get up to.

WE WELCOME BACK HAVANA COFFEE TO THE SPONSOR FAMILY!

There is so much to love about Havana Coffee. Their values, sustainability, and culture is just the beginning, how about their artwork! Amazing!

A part of next year’s performance prize packs, team members who are first, second, or third in their age division within each event category will smell extra good with the addition of a bag of this awesome caffeine fix. #COFFEEUFEEL

Havana Coffee Works has been leading the coffee revolution in NZ since 1989.
When Havana started there were just 4 coffee companies roasting in New Zealand.
The industry has since grown substantially and now there’s more than 400, but from the beginning Havana has stayed true to their vibe & vision – roasting the COFFEEUFEEL, having fun, being connected to community and celebrating the origins of coffee, plus drinking a heap of epic espresso!

Cheers for supporting the Spirited Women – All Women’s Adventure race, Havana Coffee Works!

Facebook: Havana Coffee Works Instagram: @havanacoffeeworks.

WE ARE BEYOND THRILLED TO WELCOME BACK WHITTAKER’S TO THE SPONSOR FAMILY!

As a part of this year’s performance prize packs, members from the second in each age division team within each event category will each receive a block of Whittaker’s Chocolate (plus a bunch of other sponsor goodies).

It’s true that Whittaker’s cares an awful lot about chocolate. But they also care about supporting the communities around us and producing our chocolate in ways that are sustainable, better for the planet, and better for the people they work with. These are just some of the ways they do that, and we love that!

WE ARE DELIGHTED TO WELCOME KAI CARRIER BACK TO THE SPONSOR FAMILY

We are stoked to welcome back Kai Carrier to our 2022 team of partners. These are perfect for carrying snacks, sandwiches, and just about anything, during your training and participation for our Spirited Women – All Women’s Adventure Race events. Thank you so much, Carol, Denise and the Kai Carrier team for your support of the Spirited Women – All Women’s Adventure Race! . Freezer safe . Reuseable . Plastic with purpose.

If you’re also in the mood for giving and want to make a real difference, we have formed a relationship with the Sir Edmund Hillary Outdoors Education Trust (Nationally), the TukiTuki Trails Trust (for the North Island event) & Wanaka SAR (for the South Island event), to help raise valuable funds for their causes.

Now is a great time for you all to get focused on up-skilling (navigation practice in your neighborhood), getting your compulsory gear sorted (online shopping with our sponsors), and getting out and about around your neighborhood for some fresh air and training. Find the nearest hill and make it your best friend ?

2022 EVENT PREPARATION TIP 3: ZEENYA TIGHTS – WEAR WHAT BRINGS YOU HAPPINESS!

Here at Zeenya HQ, we’ve been proudly supporting Spirited Women since 2017 after taking part in their inaugural event in Rotorua. A few things have changed but one thing that hasn’t is our love for this epic event and the women who say yes to giving it a go. Our brand has always been about community and connection. And what better way for active women to connect than by an awesome adventure.

Recently, our Head of Colour, Chloe was interviewed by Matt and Eugene from Dirt Church Radio. Together they talked about a whole bunch of things, from signing up to new challenges, the Olympics, Spirited Women and the importance of women coming together to try new things. You can check out the episode here if you’re not into trail running chat, you might want to skip forward to about 36mins in.

Colour has never been an afterthought for Zeenya. It’s always been at the forefront of what we do. Why? Because we believe in wearing what brings you happiness. And we all know that happy people are more motivated!

Our next ranges will be released in September and October, so plenty of time to get your team kit sorted for the 2022 events. If you haven’t already connected, we’d love to chat via AnchorFacebook or Instagram. See you on the trails!

EVENT PREPARATION TIP 4: THE THREE P’s FOR QUALITY PERFORMANCE FROM SALMING

Producing quality on any performance generally depends on the 3 Ps.

  1. Plan – The crucial stage where we chalk out our plan is foremost. Working backwards from the event and writing up training methods, duration, and scheduling rest and recovery are all good ways to plan a successful campaign.
  2. Prepare – Once we know what we need to do, it is time to commit to the cause. A disciplined mindset with flexibility around other commitments is the key to pursue the goal after an effective plan.
  3. Persist – The critical stage where we start having doubts can be a real challenge. Keeping your end goal in mind and insight – with a physical object or text, really helps us stick to our guns. Persistence is key.

We believe Salming shoes are the perfect shoes for the Spirited Women – All Women’s Adventure Race. Check out their trail running range and lots more here. Salming is a loyal partner of this event and has been generous enough to provide you all with a discount code to get $50 off your next online purchase. See the photo below for the code.

EVENT PREPARATION TIP 5: HOW TO KEEP MOTIVATED OVER THE WINTER – NZ ADVENTURE RETREATS

Motivation can come from many places. As Simon Sinek would say it’s important and helpful to “find your why”! Why have you signed up to do this adventure race? Is it to be more active and get fit? Become healthier? Upskill in certain areas and reach a goal? Or to hang out with your friends? Whichever it is, define it and let it be your motivation in the process of preparing for your race.

If your ‘why’ is to hang out with friends, then this is the perfect excuse to plan get-togethers leading up to the race for training missions. Get into the hills with a map and compass, plan a weekend mountain biking one of the many amazing trails or bike parks around NZ or head away trail running together.

Maybe your ‘why’ is to upskill and become a better adventure racer so you can perform better or gain more enjoyment from your race. Look at which areas you need to upskill in and target clubs and courses that help with those specific areas. If it’s technical mountain biking, then join your local club and get out as much as you can. If it’s navigation, take a map with you into the bush/hills whenever you can and practice following along where you are on the map. Join your local orienteering club and get to events. Or join a navigation clinic or adventure race skills weekend to become more confident.

If your ‘why’ is to get fitter and healthier find someone you can be accountable to (maybe a teammate) or sign up to work with a coach who will help hold you accountable. The beauty of training for an adventure race is that it’s fun! If you usually have trouble sticking to a training programme, incorporate fun adventures into your schedule rather than just long runs, rides and paddles. If you are time-limited during the week and can only do shorter sessions, make sure you plan some longer adventures for the weekends and holidays. These can even include your family. Carrying all the gear for your family on a hike is great strength endurance training. Or towing your 7-year-old up hills on the bike is great for the legs!

Find your ‘why’ and let that be your motivation. Get creative, get adventurous and get going!

Kym along with Rach Smith (NZ elite orienteer and rogaine champ) from Navigation North and Nic Leary (NZ elite mountain biker, Xterra champ and physio) will be running a series of specific Women’s Adventure Race Skills weekends to help with up-skilling in different aspects of the race and help you become a more confident and competent adventure racer.

EVENT PREPARATION TIP 6 FROM BECKY AT GOODBYE PRODUCTS: HOW DO YOU GET THROUGH THE FEAR OF LEARNING SOMETHING NEW?

Check out Becky’s blog named the First Twenty Rides. Join Becky for a story that outlines her decision to learn how to mountain bike after years of being petrified of it. She shares her insights, plans, and results and also a short video that explains how you can apply her approach to anything you’d like to learn in life.

In June, she wrote that her desire to participate with her family’s biking adventures and to be in next year’s Spirited Women Adventure Race got strong enough for her to overcome her fears and the dread of the awkward learning curve of learning to ride a mountain bike.

She committed to doing twenty rides and put a note on the refrigerator that said we’d celebrate when I reached that milestone. Here’s some of the framework she used to set up this Learn to Ride project:

  • Ride two times a week for at least an hour, and don’t even think of stopping until you’ve done twenty rides.
  • Time on the bike is more important than pushing into new skills every single ride. I need to learn without getting hurt.
  • Ask questions of my riding family. Let them help.

Click here to read her blog to find out some of her learnings and where and how it went down.

EVENT PREPARATION TIP 8: WORDS OF WISDOM FOR FIRST-TIMERS FROM TEAM PATCHELL !

Driven by innovation, Patchell Group welcomes diversity in its workforce. We are proud to have Patchell Group’s support of the Spirited Women – All Women’s Adventure Race because… #womencandoanything

Team Patchell is extremely excited about the upcoming event in 2022 because of the feeling of empowerment when walking over that finish line as a team and knowing they did it together.

In terms of preparation, they are currently all trying to keep moving whether it be going to the gym, attending spin classes, or going on team walks (when not in lockdown 4) . Getting out there is a lot harder during the winter months so their main goal during winter has been to keep active however and whenever they can and to support each other to keep motivated.

Moving into the warmer months, their plan is to concentrate on biking to help build the confidence of their new team members. They will also attend orienteering events in Rotorua and go on lots of fun weekend walks.

Their advice to first-timers is to start training as soon as possible, do not wait for the beginning of a new week, for spring to arrive or until after Christmas. It’s going to be hard now and it’s going to be hard then, but the sooner you start the easier and less stressful it will be at the end.

GETTING TO KNOW OUR PARTNERS AND THEIR WHY! THE SISTERS WINE

Our most commonly asked question is “Who are The Sisters?” So here goes! Some years ago, a family planted a small vineyard in Marlborough and sent their grapes to Lawson’s Dry Hills to be made into wine. They had one label at the time, called Blind River. This wine was exceptionally good and continues to be a benchmark Awatere Valley Sauvignon Blanc.  In the late 2000s, a big yield meant too many grapes for just the Blind River label, so the family created another label calling it The Sisters, after their three daughters. Lawson’s Dry Hills made this wine too, ultimately buying the vineyard in 2012 when the family decided to sell up.

In 2014, Belinda Jackson joined the team as GM for Blind River and was immediately faced with making decisions around The Sisters brand. The illustrated faces of the three sisters were in a strong black and white graphic on the wine label – but they were no longer part of the business.  Authenticity is key, so Belinda had to decide whether to carry on regardless, stop producing the wine altogether, or reinvent and relaunch the brand.

Belinda decided to create a meaningful, relevant wine brand for women. And she was conscious too of the pressure on women to do more, to be more.  Belinda really wanted women to recognise and acknowledge that they were already achieving a huge amount, every day!

Pick up a glossy mag on one of those rare occasions you get to sit down for a minute (probably in a waiting room) and there it is again – another article telling you how to cook the perfect meal, raise the perfect children, crack that glass ceiling at work.  And yet every day, we’re achieving a huge amount, juggling all kinds of activities from looking after the home and family (young, elderly, and in-between), to community stuff and oh yes, working! There’s a never-ending ‘to do’ list.  And yet those messages keep coming at us to be the ‘perfect woman’, to do more, be more, achieve more, give more.

Enough! The ‘small’ everyday things that we take for granted, matter. This is our daily, weekly recipe or formula that keeps our world turning and is a huge part of what makes our lives what they are, this is enough. We are enough. You are enough!

And that’s why, as well as acknowledging the everyday things we do, we also wanted these wines to be at the heart of girlfriends getting together to celebrate their friendships, whether that be engrossed in conversation, in fits of laughter or anything in between.  It’s often these important friendships that fall to the bottom of the list. We don’t even seem to have the time to pick up the phone to chat, and yet these are ‘our people’, they understand, and their friendships are unfailing. They lead a similar life juggling work and family, community, and home. The connection between us is always there, it’s a given. And there’s really no need to explain – it’s understood. So, when we do get together, it’s as if it was only yesterday since the last time, – hugs and smiles, laughter and understanding. It’s like a tonic.

And we hope taking part in Spirited Women is a tonic of sorts for you!  Belinda is entering the event for the first time and says, “There’s nothing like full immersion when sponsoring an event! This is a great chance for four friends of a similar vintage to get together and enjoy (?!) a challenge. We’re supportive rather than hugely competitive, and while we will certainly strive to do our best, including training beforehand, we hope to really enjoy the whole experience. Three of the team have done this sort of thing before, one hasn’t….me. So yes, I am a bit nervous of being the weakest link…but I like to push myself – we all do – so bring it on!”

Wine undoubtedly plays a role in our lives: to enjoy at the end of a long day, to celebrate with, to pair with great food, to share and enjoy. What better way to stop and acknowledge all that we do and the sisters who are right there doing it with us.

The Sisters – wine for women who do extraordinary things, every day. That’s us.

PARTING WORDS

Let’s hope this current outbreak of COVID doesn’t last too long and we can all get out and enjoy the first month of Spring! Find ways to up-skill yourself and your teammates to ensure you’re well prepared. And remember the why of this event. This event enables you to do something that is good for you physically, mentally, and emotionally; it pushes you outside your comfort zone; it allows you to connect deeply with friends and or family; it is fun; it gets you into the great New Zealand outdoors; it gives you the confidence to try new things and last but not least it FEELS GOOD ?

Kindest regards, Neil, Katrine and Debbie

2022 CENTRAL HAWKES BAY AND WANAKA ENTRY UPDATES!

Since opening entries for both events on June 1st entries have been rolling out the door. In order to fit as many of you into the event as possible and to clear waitlists, we have jiggled the bib numbers around. What this means is the bib number you were initially given when registering may have changed. It is no big deal but once we update the timetables for each event in 2022, make sure you have a quick look at your current Bib number before you work out your start time.

The number of entries available we currently have for Central Hawkes Bay is as follows…

  • Long Course: 15 entries available

VENUE & TRIP PLANNING – CENTRAL HAWKES BAY

The event venue planning is now well underway. The event registration/expo and prize giving will take place at the Pettigrew Arena 480 Gloucester Street Taradale, Hawke’s Bay. Anyone choosing to stay in either Hastings City/Havelock North or Central Hawke’s Bay District (from Waipukurau to the North of the District) will be in easy driving distance from both the event location and the pre/post-event activities. If you have not already done so, now is the time to lock in your accommodation. For more information on where to stay and what to do in Central Hawkes Bay please click here.

Whilst we can’t give away too much information about the course, we can confirm that the bike drop will take place on the morning of the event 30 mins prior to your start. Please note that for the CHB event, teams will need their own transport to the start. Teams must have the ability to fit all competitors and bikes in/on one or two cars. For this event, there will be an in time frame and an out time frame for all vehicles to the event start. What this means is that if your friends or family are planning to drop you off at the start, they will not be permitted to leave the start until all starts have been completed and outwards traffic is permitted. We highly recommend teams to be totally independent for this event in terms of vehicles and bike transportation.

VENUE & TRIP PLANNING – WANAKA

The event venue planning is now well underway. The event registration and Expo venue have not been confirmed yet, but we can tell you that it will take place either in central Wanaka itself or a five-minute drive from the centre of town. Once we have confirmed the venue, we will let you all know.

If you have not already done so, now is the time to lock in your accommodation. We advise teams to organise accommodation anywhere within Wanaka township or nearby settlements to be close to all the action.

Whilst we can’t give away too much information, we can confirm that the bike drop will take place on the morning of the event 30 mins prior to your start. Again, please make sure you have transport to get you and your bikes to the bike drop and start.

For more information on what to stay and what to do in Wanaka please click here.

GOODBYE PRODUCTS FOUNDER OPENS UP ABOUT OVERCOMING HER FEARS TO TAKE ON OUR 2022 WANAKA SPIRITED WOMEN EVENT!

For the past several years, Becky from Goodbye products has been an incredibly supportive sponsor for the Spirited Women’s Adventure Race with her sunscreens, balms and creams being found in your goody bags and on our spot prize stand every year. During the last few years, Becky has been feeling a little bit envious of all the women out on course and being part of a team that adventures together. In 2022 not only will she be there to welcome you to the event but she will also be out there on course with you all. Becky is a former outdoor guide and an accomplished outdoorswoman. She has written a story about overcoming her fears of mountain biking in order to participate in our Wanaka event.

THE ZEENYA CREW ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE THIS WINTER!

The wonderful crew at Zeenya have teamed up with fellow Kiwi brand Offcut, a sustainable & eco-conscious biz that collects textile remnants that are destined for landfills, and turns them into epic, limited-run hats, made in New Zealand. They plant trees for every product sold, and their mission is to inspire others to rethink what we call “waste”.

The team at Zeenya has also been very busy creating some new designs for 2021 and beyond. Head to their website to see all the cool stuff they have been up to.

Spirited Women – All women’s Adventure Race: Late May 2021 e-news

View web version | Unsubscribe

Hi Spirited Women,

Happy Autumn. We hope you are all healthy and well, and out and about exploring this beautiful country of ours with your family and friends.

We have spent the last couple of months getting ready for our 2022 North and South Island event entry releases and are extremely excited about what lies ahead. We hope you will be able to join us in our wonderful two locations for 2022.

For those of you who don’t already know, the seventh edition of the North Island Spirited Women — All Women’s Adventure Race will be held in Central Hawkes Bay from Friday 25th – Sunday 27th February 2022. The third edition of the South Island Spirited Women — All Women’s Adventure Race will be held in Wanaka from Friday 1st – Sunday 3rd April 2022.

For more information on both these locations check out our website here.

RELEASING A NEW INTRO COURSE FOR THOSE WHO WANT TO GIVE OUR SPIRITED WOMEN EVENTS A GO BUT ARE NOT SURE THEY HAVE THE FITNESS OR THE SKILL SET.

We are pretty excited to announce that we have added a new Intro course (time range 3hrs total all teams) to the Spirited Women – All Women’s Adventure Race suite of event categories for 2022. This intro course is a bike and foot (non-kayak) navigation challenge that is designed for first-timers and entry-level participants who are not keen on spending more than three hours out in the wilderness. This event is open to teams of four women as are all our other event categories.

This course is set up as a Rogaine format event, meaning you get to choose how many checkpoints you want to collect appropriate to your skills and fitness within the allotted time frame of three hours.

What is involved:

  • Map reading navigation & strategic thinking
  • Mountain biking
  • On & off-trail trekking (running or walking)
  • A fun but challenging mystery activity – it would not be an adventure race without one!

Teams in the Intro Course have a set time of 3 hours to get as many controls as they can. Teams will be penalised for every minute after 3 hours that they cross the finish line late. As navigation is involved it is hard to estimate distance, however, an approximate total distance for the winning Mini-course team: 10-20k mountain biking, 5 – 10km trekking, in no set order and could be split up.

Check out our website for more details here.

ENTRIES FOR BOTH THE NORTH ISLAND AND SOUTH ISLAND 2022 EVENTS OPEN ON TUESDAY 1ST JUNE AT 7:00 AM

Drum-roll….  Online registrations will go live to everyone on Tuesday 1st June 2021 at 7:00 am for both of our 2022 events. Lock it in your diaries now.  As most of our Spirited Women know from previous experience our events can sell out in minutes. If you’re keen to enter a team, we recommend entering early to save disappointment.

To ensure your online entry experience is streamlined and stress-free, please follow the steps below to get registered.

THE ONLINE ENTRY PROCESS

  1. Designate a team captain responsible for entering the team
  2. When entries open (on Tuesday 1st June at 7:00 am) the team captain must first create an EventPlus profile for themselves (or login if they have one already) and register for the team
  3. The team captain then enters in any known team member email addresses (if they have them)
  4. The team captain completes the remainder of personal questions and then must pay for the complete team entry fee by credit card to confirm their team registration

Once registered, a team code will be sent to all listed teammates email addresses (entered in step 4 above), so these teammates can create profiles (or login if they have one already) and add themselves to the team before online entries close, two weeks before the event weekend. To add a new team member over the upcoming months, please see these steps on your entry confirmation email.

To find out more, together with what amazing things are included in your entry, click here.

EVENT INSURANCE & WITHDRAWALS/REFUNDS/ PRIVACY POLICIES

There have been many questions around event insurance, what it covers, and how it will work going forward. Please click here for a full explanation. Please make sure that before you enter this event, you are comfortable with and understand fully our event waiver, and our event insurance & withdrawal/refund/ and privacy policies. It is your responsibility on registering to ensure you have read all of these documents.

ENTRY LIMIT AND WAITLISTS

The event is strictly limited to 500 teams (2000 women) on a first entered basis, per North Island and South Island. There are only;

34 Long Course Team Spaces
204 Medium Course Spaces
170 Short Course Team Spaces
92 Intro Course Team Spaces

A wait-list will operate for those teams who miss out on getting in and wish to have the opportunity to replace any teams withdrawing at a later date. Note: When an entry becomes available for the event category length your team has indicated you would like to compete in, you will get a call-up phone call. If you decide that your team would no longer take part, we would appreciate it if you removed your team from the waitlist.

HOODIE SIZING CHARTS

All the team members entered before 1st October 2021 will receive a Spirited Women Hoodie as part of their entry fee. The Team Captain is the only person who can select sizes for the whole team (not team members).

SIZE TO FIT XS (8) S (10) M (12) L (14) XL (16) 2XL (18) 3XL (20)

A WELCOME FROM CENTRAL HAWKE’S BAY!

We are very excited to welcome you to our region in 2022. Central Hawke’s Bay runs from Pukehou in the North to Takapau in the South and spans from the Ruahine Ranges to the Pacific Coast. Central Hawke’s Bay is well known for its impressive natural landscapes, beaches, fishing and diving, golf, cycling, and bush walks making it the perfect location for the Spirited Women – All Women’s Adventure Race. A treasure trove of historic villages and majestic homesteads, boutique shopping and charming wineries, as well as some of New Zealand’s most spectacular countryside, make Central Hawke’s Bay a gem waiting to be discovered.

Enjoy Central Hawke’s Bay at a relaxed pace before or after your event. Sip award-winning local wines and beautiful produce or enjoy some of our excellent walking and tramping tracks, mountain biking and cycling, wakeboarding or cable boarding.

For more information about the region check out our website.

DONATE TO A GOOD CAUSE – CENTRAL HAWKE’S BAY

For the 2022 North Island event, the Spirited Women – All Women’s Adventure Race has formed a relationship with the Rotary River Pathways Trust, to help raise valuable funds for their cause.

The Rotary River Pathways Trust is a local Central Hawke’s Bay group of trail builders who have a big dream of building and expanding the well-known Tuki Tuki Trail. They also are strong supporters of a range of other improvement projects, like local schools, community assets, and the arboretum.

The Tuki Tuki Trail (and mountain bike trails at the Gum Tree Park) is a network of trails for walkers and bikers, situated in Central Hawkes Bay between the townships of Waipukurau & Waipawa. It offers a wide variety of trails and tracks along the beautiful Tuki Tuki river for locals and travellers from outside of the region (like you!) to enjoy the recreational use of both walking & cycling of this trail. This trail has been fully supported and built by this Rotary River Pathways Trust, with many supporters along the way.

For every $100 we contribute, 1 metre of professionally built MTB trail will be laid. It’s quick and easy to donate, click here to find out more and to make a donation, today.

KIA ORA AND WELCOME FROM WANAKA

Wanaka sits amidst the stunning Southern Alps of New Zealand. Visit us and you’ll quickly discover why the Spirited Women – All Women’s Adventure race chose us as their 2022 destination and discover what draws visitors from all over the world to Wānaka. The gorgeous natural beauty of the mountains, lakes and forest make it the perfect location for a getaway. Not to mention the exceptional food and wine, and, of course, the outdoor activities: walks, hikesskiingbiking—all against the backdrop of Mt Aspiring National Park, part of Te Wāhipounamu – South West New Zealand World Heritage area.

Before or after your event be sure to spend some time strolling the streets. We guarantee you will be inspired by our galleries, stylish shops, cinemas and be spoilt for choice with a great selection of cool cafes, restaurants and food trucks.

Wānaka has so much to do that it will keep even the most active traveller happy – the hardest thing is deciding what to do!”

For more information about Wanaka click here.

DONATE FOR A GOOD CAUSE – WANAKA

For the 2022 South Island event, we have formed a relationship with the Wanaka Search and Rescue team, to help raise valuable funds for their cause.

Wanaka Search and Rescue is a registered charity and an all-volunteer group that depends solely on grants and donations. They receive no Government support.

They have a team of around 80 volunteers in specialist field teams covering alpine, sub-alpine and river/canyon rescue, and in an average year respond to between 30 and 45 call-outs a year on behalf of the NZ Rescue Coordination Centre and NZ Police – making them perhaps the busiest ‘back-country SAR group in NZ. While most of their activity is in the Mt Aspiring National Park, Wanaka/Hawea lakes region, they frequently respond to emergency beacon activations from south of Aoraki/Mt Cook to well into Fiordland.

We are stoked to be supporting these incredibly dedicated volunteers who go to great lengths to ensure we are well looked after when things go wrong in the outdoors.

It’s super easy to donate through the Spirited Women donations platform by clicking here, to make a donation today.

WHANGAREI VERY IMPORTANT PRE-EVENT EMAIL

| View web versionUnsubscribe

Ten days until race day. This is it for pre-event communications. We want to ensure you are loaded up with all the information you need to have a smooth, happy and memory-rich event experience. Please make sure you read the below information thoroughly as we love seeing cool, calm, collected women turning up to register.

FIRSTLY — THE RECENT COVID -19 ANNOUNCEMENT AND ITS IMPLICATIONS

Dear Spirited Women,

Following the announcement that the Auckland region will be going into Covid-19 Alert Level 3 lockdown from 6 am on Sunday 28th February for a minimum of seven days, we feel it important to provide all those involved in the 2021 Northland Spirited Women with some relevant communications around the delivery of the upcoming event between Friday 12th – Sunday 14th March.

We are fully aware of the need to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and are committed to the New Zealand Event Sector Voluntary Code. We are following and adhering to all Government, Ministry and Health Guidance, and will continue to do so over the period of the event.

The safety of the host community, our staff and participants are at the forefront of our decision making.

Please refer to the points below:

1. Should Auckland still be at Alert Level 3 on Thursday 11th March 2021, the Northland Spirited Women event will be postponed (with full entry transfer) to a TBC date in Spring 2021.

BE PREPARED! GET THE RIGHT EQUIPMENT!

SHOES – All team members need to have a suitable pair of comfortable footwear for the trekking stages of the event. We recommend Salming trail shoes as they have great grip, awesome cushioning and are super comfortable. Check out the Enroute shoe below which is equipped with a grippy Vibram outsole, cushioned Recoil midsole and a dynamic Exo skeleton upper, the footwear will not just amaze you but also make your outdoor experiences more enjoyable. Remember to use your code SPIRIT20 to get a whopping 20% off. Offer ends at the end of this month so be in quick.

COMPETITION – The winner of our January Salming facebook competition is Roseanne Holmes. Congratulations. The team at @Salming will be in touch regarding your prize, which is an Adventure Bag worth $149.00.

BACKPACKS – All team members need a suitable, comfortable pack big enough to carry all personal and team compulsory gear, plus water and nutritional supplies, and sometimes trekking shoes, for the duration of the event. We recommend Camelbak packs for the Spirited Women events. Check out their store finder for NZ suppliers. Having pockets at the front of your pack for food is a good idea, as it means you don’t have to stop and take off your pack to eat. This means you are more likely to eat regularly and stay fuelled for the duration of the event.

MOUNTAIN BIKE – Everyone needs a mountain bike. Please make sure you get your bike serviced at a bike shop a few weeks before the event to minimise the chance of mechanicals out on course. There is nothing worse than discovering your brakes are jammed on, or your gears don’t change, on event day.  Each team must also carry tools to fix the necessary running repairs. Make sure someone in your team knows how to fix a puncture and a broken chain.

CYCLE HELMET – In line with NZ Law, it is compulsory for everyone to wear a NZ safety approved cycle helmet when riding your bike.

BIKE LIGHTS – In line with NZ Law, a front (white) and rear (red) light are both compulsory:

  • A rear red light must be fixed to the mountain bike. Please make sure you secure this well. It is advisable to use a little tape to ensure the light does not rattle loose from the holder and come off whilst riding.
  • A white light must be fitted facing the direction of travel. This could be fixed to the handlebars or helmet. The headlamp (also a compulsory item) mounted to a rider’s helmet will suffice for the front light, in which case we also recommend Black Diamond Headlamps.

COMPULSORY GEAR

Now is the time to ensure you have all the mandatory gear. Prior planning is the key to success! For more detailed information on the mandatory gear list, please see the website here. This gear is for your safety and the safety of your team. If something goes wrong out there, or if the weather turns nasty, you will be thankful for having this gear.

Per individual:

  • Seam-sealed hooded waterproof jacket
  • Warm* thermal jersey
  • Warm* thermal base layer top (long sleeve)
  • Warm* thermal base layer leggings
  • Warm* hat
  • Warm* gloves
  • Headlamp with spare fresh batteries, we recommend Black Diamond
  • Adequate food – for the completion of the entire race
  • Sufficient water – between places on course water can be topped up

Per team:

  • Basic first aid kit
  • Survival blanket
  • Compass
  • Whistle
  • Fine tipped permanent marker pen – for planning your route and writing down any clues on course
  • Fully charged phone in a sealable waterproof bag

WHAT ELSE DO I NEED …?

On race day, you are in the sun all day LONG! Make sure you have enough of our high-performance Goodbye OUCH Sun Balm sunscreen. It has been tested as SPF 50 and 2 hours water resistance and at SPF 40 and 4 hours water resistance. This is important because you won’t sweat it off of your hard-working sunshine face, or swim it off of your cool, happy swimming face. And a bonus? Sun Balm sunscreen is certified natural, developed in New Zealand by Becky Cashman, a professional outdoor guide, so you know the product belongs outdoors with you. Check out their SHOP.

WHAT TO EAT AND DRINK

All women are required to carry adequate nutrition for the completion of the entire race, and adequate hydration between places water can be topped up.

Nutrition – We recommend you eat something at least every hour whether you feel hungry or not to keep up your energy levels. Our favourite snack is the snack range by Ceres Organics, especially their Raw Bars. Make sure you store your snacks in your Kai Carrier re-useable pouches to save on gladwrap or plastic bag usage. Remember to train on the food you intend to race on, so your stomach doesn’t get a shock on event day ?

Hydration – Nuun will be on course to keep you hydrated and is available in a range of great-tasting flavours from your local sports retailer. As with your food we recommend testing out anything you are planning to drink on event day in training.  If you haven’t already, now is a great time to try it out!

WHAT TO WEAR?

Obviously, comfort should be top of mind and luckily, we have got a bunch of partners who have the perfect race kit options for you to wear whilst taking part in the Spirited Women – All women’s Adventure Race. We recommend you check out the Ground Effect cycle clothing range and the awesome and super colourful Zeenya Clothing Sports Range for all your on-event clothing needs. Also to keep your teammates happy during the event be sure to use Aotearoad deodorant.
